Healthcare is one of Microsoft's multibillion dollar businesses

With 1,100 employees and 168,000 customers, Microsoft's healthcare unit is a multibillion dollar business, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Simon Kos told CNBC's podcast "Beyond the Valley."

Dr. Kos joined Microsoft in 2010 and has helped the company's healthcare unit garner 14,000 partnerships with hospitals and healthcare institutions around the world.

Microsoft has its sights set on artificial intelligence and cloud technologies. In 2017, the company launched an initiative called Healthcare NExT to bring these tools to the healthcare industry, including using AI and cloud computing to help scan medical imagery and recommend potential diagnoses.
